Addiction, Avoidance, and the Search for Home

Addiction is usually spoken about in terms of substances or destructive habits. Drugs. Alcohol. Nicotine. Gambling. Sex. Food. Shopping. Screens. Work. These are the visible forms. They are the things we can name, measure, condemn, treat, or confess.

But I wonder whether addiction is far wider than that.

The NHS defines addiction as not having control over doing, taking, or using something to the point where it could be harmful. That is a useful definition. It gives us a practical way to recognise when something has crossed a line. If a behaviour damages our health, relationships, work, finances, or ability to live freely, then something serious is happening.

But I think there is another question underneath the practical definition.

What is the addiction trying to replace? What is missing? What emptiness is being filled, or rather, what emptiness is being covered over for a while?

Because addiction is rarely only about the object. The object may be a cigarette, a drink, a drug, a sexual encounter, a meal, a purchase, a bet, a screen, a relationship, a job, a belief, a cause, or even a spiritual identity. But the deeper movement may be the same: something inside feels incomplete, uneasy, frightened, bored, lonely, ashamed, restless, or empty — and something outside promises relief.

For a moment, it works.

That may be the real danger. Addiction does not usually begin by feeling like a prison. It begins by feeling like help. It gives comfort, intensity, distraction, release, pleasure, identity, courage, or escape. It gives the impression that the emptiness has been answered. But it has not been answered. It has only been postponed.

Then the relief fades, and the emptiness returns. So the behaviour must be repeated. And gradually the person is no longer choosing freely. The thing that once seemed to help begins to demand obedience. Every addiction promises relief, but demands repetition. And repetition, if it becomes unconscious, can become a kind of slavery.

I have known some obvious addictions in my own life. Drugs. Nicotine. Sex. Mostly these belong to the past, but I am not interested in pretending that everything is neatly finished and solved. Life is not so tidy. The objects may change. The gross forms may fall away. But the inner tendencies can continue in subtler ways.

That is why this subject interests me. Not as a moral lecture. Not as a clinical analysis. But as a human question.

What are we really addicted to? And how many addictions are socially approved, even admired?

A person addicted to heroin is judged. A person addicted to work may be praised. A person addicted to alcohol may be pitied. A person addicted to success may be admired. A person addicted to shopping may be mocked. A person addicted to money may be called ambitious. A person addicted to drama may simply be considered passionate. A person addicted to outrage may think they are morally awake. A person addicted to religious certainty may believe they have found truth.

The object changes. The mechanism may not.

• There are respectable addictions. Work, achievement, productivity, status, usefulness, being busy. A person can exhaust themselves and call it responsibility. They can neglect their family and call it duty. They can avoid silence and call it service. They can run from themselves in a perfectly respectable suit.
• There are emotional addictions. Anger. Resentment. Fear. Self-pity. Drama. Being offended. Being right. Being wronged. These may sound strange as addictions, because they are not pleasant in the ordinary sense. But they can become familiar. And familiarity can be seductive. Even suffering can become part of a person’s identity.
• There are addictions to thought. Worrying, analysing, judging, remembering, rehearsing, imagining, explaining. The mind can become a machine that never stops producing stories. A person may not be addicted to a substance, but they may be addicted to the noise in their own head.
• There are addictions to certainty. Political certainty. Religious certainty. Ideological certainty. The addiction is not always to truth. Often it is to the feeling of not having to face the unknown. Certainty can be intoxicating because it removes doubt, complexity, humility, and the uncomfortable need to keep looking.
• There are addictions to screens and information. News, social media, videos, games, messages, comments, notifications. The modern world offers endless distraction and calls it connection. We can spend hours consuming information and still avoid the one thing that matters: being present to our own life.
• There are also addictions to helping, fixing, supporting, advising, serving. This is more delicate, because these things can be beautiful. They can be expressions of love and clarity. But they can also become substitutes. A person can be so busy helping others that they never have to sit quietly with themselves. They can become addicted to being needed. They can mistake usefulness for peace.

That question touches me personally.

I support Prem Rawat’s efforts to raise consciousness. I care about that deeply. I have done so for many years. But even there, the question has to be asked honestly: is this freedom, or is it attachment? Is it service, or is it compulsion? Can I do it without needing a result? Can I offer what I can and remain at peace if nobody listens, nobody comes, nobody helps, nobody understands?

That is not a criticism of the work. It is a necessary question for anyone who wants to live honestly. Because even good things can become entangled with ego, frustration, hope, disappointment, urgency, identity, or the need to be effective. The question is not whether something is good or bad on the outside. The deeper question is whether I am free in relation to it.

Can I stop?
Can I let go?
Can I care without being owned by what I care about?
Can I serve without becoming bitter?
Can I act without making my peace dependent on the outcome?

These questions matter because addiction is not only about behaviour. It is about loss of freedom.

Avoidance may be one of the most common addictions of all.

At first, avoidance does not look like addiction. It looks like postponement. It looks like being reasonable. It says, “Not today.” It says, “I am too tired.” It says, “It is complicated.” It says, “I will do it when the time is right.” It says, “Just this once.” It says, “I deserve this.” It says, “I can’t change everything now.”

Sometimes these things are true. We all need rest. We all have complicated lives. We cannot change everything in one day.

But repeated avoidance has its own reward system. Something feels difficult, painful, frightening, or uncomfortable. We avoid it. The avoidance gives immediate relief. That relief rewards the avoidance. Next time, the avoidance becomes easier and the action becomes harder. Eventually, the avoided thing grows heavier, and the person becomes trapped.

Avoidance is addictive because it offers immediate relief at the cost of future freedom.

It is easy to see this in ordinary life. Someone may genuinely want to lose weight, but still be unable to give up the repeated overindulgence that gives immediate pleasure or comfort. The visible issue is food, but food may not be the whole story. It may be reward, stress relief, rebellion, loneliness, habit, or the simple unwillingness to face discomfort. The person may sincerely want change, but not enough to let go of the behaviour that comforts them.

Another person may live in a situation of exhausting complexity, yet still be unable to give up any part of it. They may suffer under the weight of it, complain about it, and even see that it is damaging them. Yet simplification feels impossible. Perhaps complexity itself has become familiar. Perhaps it gives identity, drama, importance, distraction, or an excuse not to face something more fundamental. The burden becomes both the prison and the explanation for remaining in prison.

The addiction to complication is real.

“I would change, but my life is too complicated.”

And sometimes the complication has been built, maintained, defended, and repeated for years.
Again, this is not about blame. It is about seeing the mechanism. Human beings are very skilled at building cages and then calling them circumstances.

At the centre of all this, I keep coming back to emptiness.

Much addiction may be the attempt to fill emptiness. But the word “fill” is not quite right. Addiction does not fill emptiness. It covers it. It distracts from it. It imitates fullness. It gives a substitute. 
The problem is not always the substitute itself. The problem begins when the substitute becomes necessary. When a person is not at home within themselves, they do not merely enjoy the substitute; they depend on it to feel all right. That is where freedom begins to disappear.

The substitute may be crude or refined. Drugs are crude. Shopping is ordinary. Work is respectable. Religion may be admired. Spiritual identity may even look noble. But if the inner movement is still “I need this in order to be all right,” then the same basic problem remains.

The person is not at home in themselves. That phrase matters to me: being at home in oneself. Perhaps the deepest addiction is not addiction to any particular thing. Perhaps it is addiction to searching outside oneself for home.

A person who is not at home in themselves looks for shelter everywhere. In substances. In sex. In relationships. In work. In admiration. In control. In belief. In money. In belonging. In causes. In groups. In spiritual language. In being right. In being needed. In being seen.

But none of these can become home. They may have a place in life. Some may be useful, beautiful, necessary, or enjoyable. But they cannot become the foundation. If they are asked to provide what only inner peace can provide, they become distorted.

Even spirituality can become another form of seeking. A person may speak of peace, the heart, or being at home within, while still behaving as if fulfilment depends on recognition, belonging, activity, approval, or certainty. This is not necessarily hypocrisy. It may simply show how deep the habit of searching outside ourselves really is.

The ego can even make an identity out of having gone beyond the ego.

I have seen this. I have probably done it myself in one form or another. People can use the right words and still be driven by the old hunger. They can speak about the heart while still chasing status. They can speak about peace while creating conflict. They can speak about consciousness while living mechanically. They can say they have found themselves, while their actions suggest that home is still somewhere else.

This is delicate to say, because it can sound like judgement. But I do not mean it that way. I mean it as an observation of the human condition. We can be very sincere and still very confused. We can glimpse something true and then turn it into a role, a belief, or a possession.

A path points home. 
An addiction becomes a false home.
That distinction has shaped my life.

When I first came across Prem Rawat and his message, I recognised it as the final link in a search that had begun in my youth. I had not been myself. That disconnection led me into drugs and a dark place. But hope came, and with it a search. I looked at many things, especially the words of past masters. I was searching for something real, though I might not have been able to name it clearly at the time.

What made Prem Rawat’s message so meaningful to me was something very simple. He reminded me that what I was looking for was not an idea, a theory, a belief, a philosophy, or a perfect set of circumstances. What I was looking for was a feeling. Peace is a feeling. Clarity is felt. Contentment is felt. Being at home in oneself is felt.
And all feelings are inside me.

That made sense. It cut through a great deal of confusion. If what I was looking for was a feeling, and feelings are experienced within, then why was I searching everywhere else? Why was I looking for an inner fulfilment in outer things? 
But what completed it for me was not only that explanation. It was when he said that he could help with that. Not by giving me another belief to hold, but by offering a practical way to experience what was already within me.

That changed everything. 
Then I heard Prem Rawat in a different way. 
For me, that was the end of the search. 
But the end of the search was not the end of the journey.

In one sense, it was the real beginning. Before that, I had been looking, comparing, reading, hoping, recognising fragments of truth in many places. When I heard Prem Rawat, the searching stopped because I had found what I had been looking for. But finding something is not the same as living it.

That was the start of practising. Learning. Remembering. Forgetting and remembering again. Doing something with what I had found.
This distinction matters to me. There is a great difference between collecting ideas about peace and actually learning how to be at peace. There is a difference between admiring wisdom and allowing it to change the way one lives. There is a difference between finding a path and walking it.

So when I say the search ended, I do not mean that I became complete, finished, or superior. I mean that the restless looking elsewhere came to an end. The question was no longer, “Where is home?” The question became, “Am I living from home now?”
That question continues. Not the end of learning. Not the end of being human. Not the end of mistakes, weakness, confusion, or daily responsibility. But the end of looking elsewhere for home.

Since then, wherever I have lived — and I have lived in many places — I have always been at home. That is not a small thing.

Home stopped being geographical. It stopped being dependent on culture, language, country, success, relationship, approval, or circumstance. Home became inward. And once that is known, even imperfectly, something fundamental changes.This is why living in the present seems to me to be the greatest freedom.

The present does not ask me to be someone else. It does not ask me to carry yesterday’s identity or tomorrow’s imagined result. It does not ask me to fill an emptiness with noise. It simply asks: am I here? Am I awake to this breath, this moment, this life?

Addiction pulls me away from the present. It says, “You need this before you can be all right.” It says, “Not now, later.” It says, “Elsewhere.” It says, “More.” It says, “Again.” It says, “Escape.”
Presence says something quieter. You are alive now. Start here.

That does not mean passivity. Living in the present does not mean doing nothing. It does not mean avoiding responsibility or drifting through life with spiritual phrases. In fact, real presence may make responsibility clearer. It may show me what this moment asks of me. It may help me act without panic, speak without cruelty, listen without defensiveness, and serve without attachment.

For me, becoming a better person is not a moral achievement. It is not a badge. It is not something to announce. It is more like cleaning a window. Again and again. Seeing more clearly. Reacting less automatically. Blaming less. Listening more. Choosing more consciously.

And perhaps this is where addiction and freedom finally meet. 
Addiction is unconscious repetition. Freedom is conscious presence.
Addiction says, “I must have this to be all right.” Freedom says, “I can be here, and from here I can choose.”

This does not make life perfect. It does not remove pain, illness, ageing, disappointment, or the strange difficulty of being human. It does not mean I have no attachments left. It does not mean I am beyond addiction in all its forms. That would be too easy, and probably untrue.

But I do notice that I am not attached to much anymore. Many things that once might have owned me no longer do. And where I do still feel attachment, urgency, frustration, or compulsion, I can at least look at it. That looking matters.

Because the opposite of addiction may not simply be abstinence. Abstinence may be necessary in many cases, but the deeper opposite of addiction is freedom. The ability to see. The ability to pause. The ability to choose. The ability to be at home in oneself without needing the next substitute.

A cigarette can be put out.
A drug can be stopped.
A behaviour can be interrupted.

But the deeper work is to understand why the substitute was needed in the first place.

What was I trying not to feel?
What was I trying not to face?
What did I believe was missing?
What did I think I had to get from outside myself?
And is it possible that what I was looking for was never really outside?

That question is not theoretical for me. It is the thread that runs through my life. From not being myself, to darkness, to hope, to searching, to hearing a message that ended the search, to practising what I had found, to learning — still learning — what it means to live from home rather than looking for home.

Perhaps addiction is the search for a substitute home.
And perhaps freedom begins when the present moment becomes enough to return to.
Not because everything is solved.
Not because I am perfect.
Not because the world is sane.

But because I am alive.
And being alive, truly felt, is already the doorway home.

Knowledge Is Not Understanding 

There is a difference between knowing something and understanding it. Knowledge can be collected, repeated, and defended. Understanding begins when we become aware of what is actually moving us inside — our fear, habits, assumptions, and inherited beliefs.

There is a difference between knowing something and understanding it. At first glance, that sounds obvious. But in everyday life the difference is not always easy to see, because knowledge can be very impressive. A person can quote facts, remember phrases, repeat ideas, use the right language, and appear to know what they are talking about. They may have read the book, watched the video, attended the course, heard the explanation, and stored the information. But that does not necessarily mean they understand.

Knowledge can be collected. Understanding has to be seen.

A person may know that smoking is harmful and still smoke. They may know that anger damages relationships and still explode over nothing. They may know that jealousy is painful and still feed it. They may know that the planet is under pressure and still say, “Climate change is not my business.” They may know that life is short and still waste much of it in resentment, comparison, fear, or the endless attempt to impress other people. So what is missing? Not information. Not necessarily intelligence. Often what is missing is awareness.

I recently came across a definition of unconsciousness: a state in which a living individual exhibits a complete, or near-complete, inability to maintain an awareness of self. Medically, of course, that refers to a person who is physically unconscious. But there is another kind of unconsciousness that is much more common. A person can be awake, active, informed, opinionated, even articulate — and still have very little awareness of what is actually moving them inside. They may know the words, but not the mechanism. They may know the slogan, but not the fear behind it. They may know the belief, but not where it came from. They may know the answer, but not themselves.

This is where knowledge without understanding becomes dangerous. Not because knowledge itself is dangerous, but because it can give a person the feeling that they have arrived when they have not even begun to look.

A simple example is anger. Most people know anger is unpleasant. They know it can hurt others. They know it can spoil a day, damage a friendship, or make a small situation much worse. But when anger comes, knowledge is often not enough. The person who knows all about anger may still be completely taken over by it. Understanding begins when I can see anger as it is happening. Not as a theory. Not afterwards, when I am explaining myself, but in the moment itself. I can feel the heat rising, the body tightening, the story forming in the mind: “I am right. They are wrong. I must defend myself. I must attack.” At that point, something new becomes possible. Not because I have more knowledge, but because I have awareness.

The same is true of fear. Prem Rawat makes a useful distinction between fear, phobia, and caution. A phobia may need professional help. Caution is sensible. If a car is coming, step back. If the road is icy, walk carefully. If something is genuinely dangerous, pay attention. But fear is something else. Fear often has a history. Behind fear there is usually something we have absorbed, something repeated, something planted so deeply that we no longer question it.

That is one way to understand indoctrination. Something is repeated again and again until it is no longer examined. It becomes part of the furniture of the mind. We do not experience it as an idea we have accepted; we experience it as reality. This can happen in religion, politics, culture, family, education, advertising, and even in supposedly spiritual environments. It can happen anywhere repetition replaces seeing.

A child hears often enough that success means money, and later may spend a life chasing money without ever asking whether it brings fulfilment. A person hears often enough that people from another group are dangerous, lazy, inferior, or strange, and later may call that prejudice “common sense.” Someone hears often enough that they are not good enough, and years later that voice is still active inside them, although the original speaker may be long gone. Another person hears often enough that loyalty means never questioning, and later mistakes obedience for love. In all these cases, the person may have knowledge. They may have explanations. They may even have arguments. But do they have understanding?

Understanding asks a harder question: what is actually going on in me?

Even something as ordinary as looking in the mirror before going out can reveal this. What am I checking? Am I seeing whether I feel comfortable, clean, appropriate, and at ease in myself? Or am I already imagining the eyes of others? Am I dressing for the weather, the occasion, and my own sense of dignity — or am I dressing for approval, comparison, attraction, status, or fear of judgement? The point is not that there is only one correct answer. We all live among other people, and there is nothing wrong with being considerate or presentable. But the mirror can become a small moment of honesty. Am I choosing, or am I being quietly driven?

This is where choice enters. Not the shallow kind of choice between one opinion and another, but the deeper choice: do I want to understand, or do I want to go back to the comfort of repetition? Because indoctrination has a strange comfort. It removes responsibility. If I simply repeat what I was told, then I do not have to look. If I belong to a group that confirms my views, I do not have to question them. If fear is guiding me, I can call it realism. If habit is guiding me, I can call it tradition. If anger is guiding me, I can call it honesty.

Understanding disturbs all that. It does not let me hide quite so easily. It asks: Is this true, or have I only heard it often? Is this caution, or is this fear? Is this my experience, or someone else’s conclusion? Am I awake to myself, or merely repeating?

Everyday life gives us countless examples. A person may know that health matters, but only understand it after illness forces them to listen to the body. A person may know that kindness matters, but only understand it when they see the effect of one cruel sentence. A person may know that peace is important, but only understand it when they become tired of the noise inside themselves. A person may know that other people suffer, but only understand compassion when their own suffering softens them. A person may know the word “gratitude,” but only understand it when they truly feel the value of breathing, walking, seeing, hearing, or being alive for one more day.

Knowledge often lives in the head. Understanding involves the whole person. That is why understanding changes behaviour, while knowledge often only decorates it. Someone who knows about patience may still be impatient. Someone who understands patience has begun to taste its value. Someone who knows about peace may talk about it endlessly. Someone who understands peace begins to protect it inside themselves. Someone who knows about love may define it beautifully. Someone who understands love becomes less careless with the hearts of others.

This difference matters because modern life is full of knowledge. We are surrounded by information. We can look up almost anything. We can collect facts faster than any previous generation. But more information has not necessarily made human beings wiser, calmer, kinder, or more fulfilled. In some ways, it has made us more reactive. We know more, but understand less. We consume opinions, repeat headlines, join arguments, defend positions, and mistake stimulation for intelligence.

To understand requires something quieter. It requires attention, honesty, and the willingness to observe oneself without immediately running away into excuses. That is not always comfortable. It is much easier to say, “This is just how I am.” It is easier to blame the weather, the government, the neighbour, the partner, the past, the traffic, the heat. And yes, a hot day can make anyone snappy. Tiredness can make anyone impatient. Pain can shorten anyone’s fuse. But understanding begins when I can see even that without handing over my responsibility.

The heat may be there. The tiredness may be there. The irritation may be there. But must I become its servant?

Knowledge says, “I know anger is bad.” Understanding says, “I can see anger beginning in me, and I do not have to feed it.” Knowledge says, “Fear is unpleasant.” Understanding says, “This fear has been repeated into me, and now I can question it.” Knowledge says, “Peace is good.” Understanding says, “Peace is my need.”

Perhaps that is the real difference. Knowledge tells me about something. Understanding brings me into contact with it. And when that contact is real, something changes. Not dramatically, perhaps. Not all at once. But enough. Enough to pause before reacting. Enough to question an inherited fear. Enough to notice when I am repeating rather than seeing. Enough to choose caution instead of fear. Enough to choose awareness instead of unconsciousness. Enough to choose understanding over indoctrination.

Because there is a kind of unconsciousness that does not require closed eyes. It is possible to move through life awake on the outside and asleep on the inside. It is possible to know many things and still not know oneself.

And perhaps the beginning of understanding is very simple: to stop repeating for a moment, to stop defending for a moment, to stop pretending for a moment, and to look.
