The Dangerous Comfort of Looking Away
“Humanity’s greatest danger may not be change, but our habit of waiting until change becomes unavoidable.”
There is something remarkably comforting about doing nothing. We can convince ourselves that by remaining silent, avoiding confrontation or simply carrying on with our lives, we bear no responsibility for what happens around us. After all, we haven't actually done anything wrong, have we?
But when we witness injustice and remain silent, when we recognise dishonesty and excuse it, or when we see suffering and decide that it is somebody else's problem, are we genuinely innocent observers? Or have we become, however unintentionally, part of the conditions that allow these things to continue?
Tolerance is generally regarded as a virtue, and rightly so. A civilised society depends upon our willingness to respect different beliefs, cultures, opinions and ways of life. But there is an enormous difference between respecting differences and tolerating cruelty, exploitation or the deliberate abuse of others. Understanding why somebody behaves destructively does not mean we must condone that behaviour.
Unfortunately, tolerance and complacency can become uncomfortable companions. We have an extraordinary capacity to adapt to circumstances, even those that should disturb us. What initially shocks us gradually becomes familiar. What once provoked outrage becomes another headline, another statistic, another unfortunate fact of life.
Complacency is the point at which familiarity becomes more persuasive than reality.
And perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this is that we are not necessarily unaware of what is happening. Quite often, we know perfectly well. We simply prefer not to consider what acknowledging it might demand of us.
The Lessons We Apparently Never Learn
On 30 September 1938, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned from Munich and declared that he believed he had secured “peace for our time”. Europe had experienced the devastation of the First World War barely twenty years earlier, and the desire to prevent another catastrophe was entirely understandable.
But the Munich Agreement came at an enormous price. Czechoslovakia was compelled to surrender territory to Nazi Germany without even being represented in the negotiations that determined its fate. Less than a year later, Europe was at war.
Chamberlain's intentions may have been sincere, and the historical circumstances were considerably more complex than hindsight sometimes suggests. Nevertheless, Munich remains a powerful illustration of a recurring human temptation: accepting reassurance rather than confronting an uncomfortable reality. Wanting peace and creating the conditions for peace are not necessarily the same thing. Sometimes avoiding confrontation merely postpones a crisis, allowing the underlying danger to grow.
The lesson is not that negotiation is weakness or confrontation invariably preferable. It is that our desire for peace must never become an excuse for refusing to acknowledge what is happening.
We might imagine that humanity would have learned something from such experiences. Yet history offers countless examples of suffering that continued not because nobody knew about it, but because societies and institutions had become accustomed to accepting it.
Consider slavery. Most of us are familiar with the transatlantic slave trade, and rightly so. Its brutality and consequences deserve to remain part of our collective memory. But how many people know much about the extensive history of slavery across the Sahara, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean?
For centuries, human beings were captured, transported, bought and sold through networks connecting Africa with Arab lands, Persia, India and beyond. Arab traders played prominent roles in several of these networks, alongside other participants. Yet this enormous chapter of human suffering receives comparatively little attention in much Western public discussion.
Why should one history of enslavement be widely remembered while another remains relatively unfamiliar? Surely, if human dignity is the principle we are defending, the identity of those responsible should make no difference. We should be equally willing to confront injustice regardless of who committed it, when it occurred or how uncomfortable its acknowledgement might be.
And slavery is certainly not just history. The International Labour Organization and its partners estimated that approximately 50 million people were living in conditions classified as modern slavery in 2021, including forced labour and forced marriage. Migrant workers in various countries continue to experience withheld wages, confiscated passports, coercion and restrictions upon their freedom. Human trafficking and forced labour exist in wealthy countries as well as poorer ones.
We may have abolished legal slavery almost everywhere, but we have certainly not abolished the human willingness to exploit others. Nor have we eliminated the economic and political interests that benefit from such exploitation.
Switzerland offers an equally uncomfortable example, and one considerably closer to home. For generations, children known as Verdingkinder were placed with other families, often on farms, where many were exploited as cheap labour. Some suffered appalling physical and psychological abuse, humiliation and sexual violence. These were not events from the distant Middle Ages. Compulsory placements and related coercive social practices continued into the late twentieth century, affecting people until 1981.
And this happened in Switzerland, a country justifiably proud of its democratic traditions, prosperity and humanitarian values. Authorities were involved, communities were aware of the arrangements, and reports of mistreatment existed. Yet the practices continued.
How many people who witnessed these injustices considered themselves decent, respectable, law-abiding citizens? Probably a great many. Which raises an uncomfortable question: is being a decent person simply a matter of not committing an injustice ourselves, or does decency also require us to challenge injustice when we encounter it?
Nor should we imagine that such failures are peculiar to Switzerland. No nation has clean hands, however attractive its account of its own history may be.
Britain rightly remembers its role in abolishing the transatlantic slave trade, yet its empire also left a history of exploitation, dispossession and violence, frequently justified in the name of civilisation. More recently, the infected blood scandal exposed decades of institutional failure in which patients received contaminated blood products, with devastating consequences. The public inquiry published in 2024 described avoidable suffering, defensiveness, concealment and failures of accountability extending across successive governments and institutions.
The United States proclaimed liberty and equality while maintaining slavery for generations and subsequently enforcing racial segregation. Indigenous children were removed from their families and placed in boarding schools intended to suppress their languages, cultures and identities. A federal investigation published in 2024 documented at least 973 deaths of Indigenous children in the boarding school system.
Germany provides perhaps the most devastating example of what can happen when prejudice, obedience, propaganda and institutional power combine. The systematic persecution and murder of millions under National Socialism required far more than a handful of individuals at the top. It depended upon institutions, administrators, professionals and ordinary citizens, including those who participated, benefited, complied or failed to resist.
Germany has made extensive efforts to confront that history, as have other countries in addressing their own historical injustices. Such efforts matter enormously, and the people who have challenged wrongdoing deserve recognition. But acknowledging the crimes of previous generations does not automatically prevent the repetition of the attitudes and behaviours that made those crimes possible.
Indeed, this is where the subject becomes particularly uncomfortable.
In 2025, British authorities received 23,411 referrals involving potential victims of modern slavery, the highest annual figure since the national referral system began. In Germany, specialist counselling organisations documented 868 cases involving human trafficking and exploitation during 2024. These figures represent identified or suspected cases within particular reporting systems, not the total extent of the problems.
And what about the treatment of women? The World Health Organization reported in 2025 that approximately 840 million women worldwide had experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, or sexual violence from someone else, during their lifetime. The estimated prevalence had scarcely changed in two decades.
In some countries, women's access to education, employment, freedom of movement and personal independence remains severely restricted through law or official policy. Elsewhere, formal legal equality coexists with domestic violence, harassment, coercion and sexual exploitation. The circumstances differ, but the underlying question remains: how can practices that deny another human being dignity and freedom continue to be tolerated simply because they are familiar, traditional or socially accepted?
Tradition can enrich human life, but longevity does not make an injustice just. Nor should concern for cultural differences require us to abandon concern for human suffering. And while it may be easy to condemn abuses in distant countries, we should be equally prepared to examine exploitation within our own communities.
The common thread running through these examples is not a particular nationality, religion or political system. It is the human capacity to become accustomed to the suffering of others, particularly when challenging it would disturb our comfort, prosperity, security or established way of life.
When the Unacceptable Becomes Normal
There is an old and rather remarkable word that deserves greater recognition: kakistocracy. Derived from ancient Greek, it means government by the worst or least suitable people.
It is a word that invites us to consider how societies judge those entrusted with power, and how their standards of accountability can gradually deteriorate. How does dishonesty become an expected feature of public life? How do abuses of authority come to be dismissed as unfortunate but unavoidable? Why do people sometimes continue to defend conduct that they would consider completely unacceptable in their personal relationships?
Public judgments about political leaders are naturally contested. But whatever our political sympathies, we should be able to recognise the danger when loyalty becomes more important than integrity, when certainty is mistaken for competence, or when a convenient explanation becomes more persuasive than demonstrable facts.
The deterioration rarely happens overnight. A falsehood is excused because it serves a preferred cause. An abuse is overlooked because challenging it would be inconvenient. A principle is abandoned because defending it might threaten our security or prosperity. Eventually, behaviour that once would have provoked widespread condemnation becomes merely another feature of everyday political life.
The problem, however, does not begin and end with those who exercise power. Governments and institutions do not exist independently of the societies that sustain them. We cannot reasonably expect honesty from those in authority while continually rewarding dishonesty whenever it suits us. Nor can we complain about failures of leadership while surrendering our own responsibility to think, question and act.
Perhaps the most troubling aspect of our present situation is that ignorance is becoming an increasingly inadequate explanation. We live in an age of extraordinary access to information. We can witness suffering almost as it happens, read detailed investigations into institutional failures and learn about exploitation occurring thousands of kilometres away or in the next town.
We know about poverty, hunger, human trafficking, violence and the suffering of people displaced by war. We know that children are abused, that women are subjected to coercion and that people are exploited for economic gain. We know that corruption and institutional failures destroy lives, and we know that at least some of this suffering could be prevented.
Yet information does not necessarily produce understanding, and understanding does not necessarily produce action.
We express outrage, demand investigations and listen to assurances that lessons will be learned. Then the news cycle moves on, our attention turns elsewhere, and life continues much as before. The very frequency with which we encounter suffering may gradually diminish our sensitivity to it.
Of course, no individual can solve all the world's problems. There are circumstances in which people are genuinely powerless, afraid or overwhelmed. Silence does not always imply approval, and it would be unfair to suggest that everyone who fails to intervene is morally equivalent to those committing an injustice.
There are also countless individuals and organisations working courageously to oppose exploitation, protect vulnerable people and challenge the misuse of power. Without them, many of the abuses we now recognise would never have been exposed.
But there is a considerable difference between acknowledging our limitations and using them to justify indifference. There is a difference between being unable to prevent an injustice and being unwilling even to question it. And there is a difference between genuine tolerance and complacent acceptance.
We may not intend to condone what is wrong. But when our silence allows it to continue unchallenged, our good intentions offer little comfort to those who suffer its consequences.
Peace Is Not Passivity
Real peace is not simply the absence of visible conflict. A society may appear peaceful while injustice flourishes beneath the surface, just as an individual may avoid every disagreement while quietly accepting circumstances that cause enormous suffering.
Peace requires more than the desire to be left undisturbed. It calls for awareness, understanding, compassion and the willingness to recognise the humanity of others. Sometimes it also requires the courage to acknowledge that something is wrong, even when doing so is uncomfortable.
This does not mean responding to every injustice with anger, hostility or confrontation. Nor does it mean replacing one form of intolerance with another. It means recognising that understanding another person does not oblige us to approve of their actions, and that a commitment to peace need not involve surrendering our concern for justice and human dignity.
We cannot necessarily prevent every injustice, but we can examine what we have come to accept. We can question our assumptions, challenge our prejudices, refuse to excuse cruelty and recognise that our everyday decisions may have consequences beyond ourselves. Above all, we can stop pretending that the condition of the world is exclusively the responsibility of somebody else.
Humanity has made remarkable progress in many areas. We have expanded rights, reduced certain forms of suffering and developed institutions intended to protect people from abuses that earlier generations took for granted. These achievements are real and should not be dismissed.
But progress is not the same as completion. Nor does recognising yesterday's injustices absolve us of responsibility for those that continue today.
We look back at previous generations and wonder how ordinary people could have tolerated things that now seem so obviously wrong. We ask why they remained silent, why they accepted official explanations, why they trusted institutions that were failing those they were supposed to protect, and why they waited so long to act.
Perhaps future generations will ask exactly the same questions about us.
They may wonder how we could have known so much about exploitation, suffering and injustice while continuing to live as though these were unavoidable features of human existence. They may ask why we so often preferred reassurance to reality, convenience to responsibility and familiarity to change.
And what will we tell them? That we didn't know? That we were too busy? That there was nothing we could do? Or simply that we had become accustomed to it?
Humanity's greatest danger may not be change, but our habit of waiting until change becomes unavoidable.
We cannot change what previous generations tolerated. But we are responsible for deciding what we will tolerate today.
And what are YOU tolerating simply by looking away?
